What's My Child's Learning Style?
The following description of learning styles is based on Dr. Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences.
One Smart Kid tutoring subscribes to his belief that the most effective way to teach is to present academic material in a way that relates to each student's learning style.
Presentation of material should reflect, nurture and validate the student's natural intelligence. Our tutors understand students' styles to effectively facilitate confidence building and the achievement of academic mastery.
The most common learning styles according to Dr. Gardner's theory are as follows:
1. Linguistic Intelligence
Linguistically talented people understand and use language with ease. They think logically, analytically, and sequentially.
Linguistic gifted learners:
Like to write
Spell words accurately and with ease
Have a good memory with names, places and dates
Enjoy reading
Enjoy building vocabulary
Tend to do well with academics and standardized tests
Logical-Mathematical people use numbers and math concepts with ease and readily understand cause-and-effect and abstract reasoning. They recognize patterns and sequences and often perform computations in their heads.
Logical-Mathematical gifted learners:
Compute arithmetic problems quickly in their heads
Enjoy computers and science
Play problem-solving games such as chess, checkers or logic puzzles
Reason things out logically and clearly
3. Visual-Spatial Intelligence
The Visually-Spatially gifted student tends to think in images and is skilled at taking things apart and reassembling them. These students can often draw accurate representations of people or things.
Visual-Spatial gifted learners:
Daydream a lot
Like to take things apart and reassemble them
Read maps, charts and diagrams with ease
Retain visual impressions of objects and ideas
4. Musical-Rhythmic Intelligence
Musically gifted students often sing and play musical instruments. They often hum or whistle, have an acute sense of rhythm, and are aware of environmental sounds.
Musical-Rhythmic gifted learners:
Remember melodies of songs
Play and enjoy musical instruments
Collect and play music
5. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
Bodily-Kinesthetically gifted students process information through the body. These students enjoy hands-on activities. They need frequent opportunities to move around and learn best when they can feel or experience what is being taught.
Bodily-Kinesthetic gifted learners:
Enjoy sports, dancing, movement, and drama
Move and fidget in their seats
Exhibit advanced fine-motor skills
6. Interpersonal Intelligence
Students with this type of intelligence work well with other people, relating to and understanding them easily. They have the ability to relate to other people's feelings and show a great deal of empathy and compassion.
Interpersonal Intelligence gifted learners:
Take leadership roles
Show empathy
Enjoy hanging out with friends
Learn best by relating and cooperating
7. Intrapersonal Intelligence
Students with this type of intelligence understand themselves and are aware of their own feelings and ideas. It is very important for them to be true to themselves.
